"ORPHANS CRY"

"Taj Weekes is much more than a performer... we are today in the midst of a mystic who finds music and poetry at the heart of all of life's experiences. In being a writer and performer of roots reggae music, Taj Weekes provides us with the fodder needed for social consciousness and intellectual dialogue, and ultimately social change."

MISSION

Taj Weekes’ music is more than just entertainment. As a poet and songwriter, Weekes seekes to inspire conscious thought and provoke discussion with his unabashed world views. Weekes says, “I write from the heart and I speak about issues that move me. I believe that’s what really matters.” Through TOCO MUSIC, Weekes aims to bring awareness to the issues he is passionate about as well as to raise funds for TOCO's projects.

INSPIRATION

TOCO's name (They Often Cry Outreach) was originally inspired by Weekes' song "Orphans Cry," from his album Deidem, which soon became the charity's theme song. Before founding TOCO, Weekes regularly brought soccer balls and other supplies for the local children on his trips home to St. Lucia and he continues in his mission to aid youth throughout the Caribbean through TOCO's progams and projects.

SONG FOR DARFUR

Written in response to the crisis in Darfur, Weekes hopes to bring greater focus to the children affected by these atrocities with "Orphans Cry." Weekes and his band Adowa are dedicated to raising awareness of the crisis in Darfur through participating in fundraising events and providing free downloads of "Orphans Cry" to share with your network of family and friends.
